A Guys Guide to New Year’s Resolutions

2016 is upon us, the year that a hotel in space was planned to be opened, but whether that happens or not it doesn’t mean that you should let your New Year’s resolutions fall by the wayside. Take note of the ’s’ on resolutions, because here at Dr. Squatch we don’t believe that you should limit yourself to just one. With so many avenues of self-improvement available we advocate deciding on a few resolutions to see in the sixteenth year of this millennium. So peruse the following guide to making some New Year’s resolutions that will make you a better man.

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

You can do this in so many different ways, a really simple one is to just spark up a conversation with a complete stranger. Many of us, especially when living in big cities, pass so many people by each day and often fail to even make eye contact. Some people will find this harder than others, but be friendly, have a chat and let them tell you a story, it is amazing how good it feels. Another way is to put yourself in the path of something you fear. Paddle out into big waves that you’re afraid to drop into. Even if you end up sitting on the shoulder and watching it will feel good just to be out there. Go camping for a night by yourself, sign up to a martial arts class, or try scuba diving. Anything that you have doubts about and takes you out of your everyday life, just give it a go.

Rid Yourself of a Vice

Almost all of us have them and they come in many forms. Maybe you enjoy a drink and a smoke just that little too much, or binging out on junk food and soda is your dirty habit. Perhaps you shirk the gym a bit too often or find yourself sat in on the sofa playing video games and watching TV more than you really should. Unless you’re a saint, the likelihood is that there is something you know you should do less of, or more of depending on what it is. If you have a vice that is dragging you down, or there is just something that your girlfriend keeps telling you not to do, then quit it.

Lead a Healthier Life

There are so many ways in which we can lead healthier lives, whether it’s eating better food or getting more exercise. There are also more subtle ways of doing it, like using natural soap to wash with or switching to a natural insect repellent instead of a chemical one. You could even try new ideas like using a standing desk if you work in an office. You don’t have to limit yourself to just one thing either, you can take on a comprehensive list of ways to lead a healthier life. There is a wealth of free information available through the Internet on nutrition, fitness and natural alternatives, so start searching.

Challenge Yourself

Whatever your passion is, push yourself to achieve something great. If you love mountaineering and you haven’t ascended one of the Seven Summits, then start preparing to tick one off your list. If you ski or snowboard then plan a run down a couloir you’ve never attempted. If fishing is your thing then go big-game fishing and try to hook something you’ve never caught before, like a marlin or swordfish. Other ideas could be to organize a team to take on a Tough Mudder event, or get yourself into training for a half marathon, even full marathon if you can handle it. The challenge really can be anything, just something that you need to prepare for to overcome, the bigger the better.

Go On an Adventure

Throw it all into the wind and head off into the unknown. Whether it’s a hike through the Amazon or a sailing trip around the Caribbean, go on an adventure that doesn’t have air-conditioned hotel rooms or a regurgitated daily itinerary to rest and reassure you. It takes courage and determination to take what is but just an idea in your mind and make it an escapade you live through, plus it’s a hell of a lot of fun. Seeing new places, meeting new people and creating your own new experience, it’s a great way to start a new year.
